Migration Report - 16th June 2006

Despite the late good rains that were experienced in much of Tanzania which might have slowed down the timetable for the wildebeest, the Migration is already well on the move. The grass is beginning to dry out though there is still a green flush thanks to the late rains. The standing water sources that help to keep the herds in the southern Serengeti, are drying out fast and will not last much longer.

In the second half of May, the wildebeest were already leaving the Ndutu/Loliondo area and crossing westwards through central Serengeti. By early June, substantial herds were all around Moru and the Mbalageti areas. As we approach the second half of the month, the large numbers of wildebeest are moving into the Western corridor and Banagi area. Since the herds do not move as one group, there will be other concentrations searching out better water supplies in different areas, through Loliondo and the eastern border of the Serengeti.

Hello,

Around the 9th of June, we saw:
- a big group near the Seronera area probably moving west
- a smaller group already moving west (in the western corridor)
- a smaller group near the ikoma gate kind of moving east or north

hope this helps
